Wolfgang Liebhart was born in Klagenfurt, Austria, in 1958. He studied composition at the Academy of Music in Vienna with Francis Burt. In 1991/92, Liebhart attended a postgraduate course in composition at Sussex University with Jonathan Harvey.
From 1994 to 1995 he lived in Rome, studying privately with the Italian composer Luca Lombardi. During his stay, numerous compositions were performed in the eternal city.
Back in Vienna, he began to work as a freelance composer. Liebhart has composed many commissioned works for various instrumental combinations, including orchestral pieces, chamber ensembles, and smaller groups. His works demonstrate a stylistic versatility ranging from modality to dodecaphony, always focusing on formal clarity.
